Speech Rate Comparison When Talking to a System and Talking to a Human: A Study from a Speech-to-Speech, Machine Translation Mediated Map Task

چکیده
This study focuses on the adaptation of subjects in Humanto-Human (H2H) communication in spontaneous dialogues in two different settings. The speech rate of sixteen dialogues from the HCRC Map Task corpus have been analyzed as direct H2H communication, while fifteen dialogues from the ILMT-s2s corpus have been analyzed as a Speech-to-Speech Machine Translation (S2S-MT) mediated H2H communication comparison. The analysis shows that while the mean speech rate of the subjects in the two task oriented corpora differ, in both corpora the role of the subject causes a significant difference in the speech rate with the Information Giver using a slower speech rate than the Information Follower. Also the different settings of the dialogue recordings (with or without eye contact in the HCRC corpus and with or without live video streaming in the ILMTs2s corpus) only show a negligible difference in the speech rate. However, the gender of the subjects have provided an interesting difference with the female subjects of the ILMT-s2s corpus using a slower speech rate than the male subjects, gender does not show any difference in the HCRC corpus. This indicates that the difference is not from performing the map task, but a result of their adaptation strategy to the S2S-MT system.

Talking to a System and Talking to a Human: A Study from a Speech-to-Speech, Machine Translation Mediated Map Task
This study focuses on the properties of Human-to-Human (H2H) communication in spontaneous dialogues in two different settings. Direct H2H dialogues are compared to the ones that are mediated by a Speech-to-Speech machine translation system. For the analysis, dialogues from the HCRC Map Task Corpus, for direct H2H conversations, and dialogues from the ILMT-s2s Corpus, for computer mediated conve...
متن کاملAn Investigation of Dual Task Effect on The Severity of Stuttering in School-Age Children
Objective: Stuttering is a speech disorder that occurs with frequent and abnormal disruptions in speech, such as sound repetition, sound prolongation, and sound or airflow blockage. Although various hypotheses and factors have been introduced including cognitive and linguistic factors, the etiology of stuttering has not been fully understood. According to the vicious circle hypothesis, increase...

The Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) was identified in late 2019 and has gradually spread to all countries. Following the outspread of this virus as a community-acquired disease, many researchers have been trying to identify various factors involved in the transmission of the virus, as well as the ways to prevent its transmission from person to person. For example, researchers have found tha...
متن کاملTalking to a system and oneself: A study from a Speech-to-Speech, Machine Translation mediated Map Task
The results of a comparison between three different speech types — On-Talk, speaking to a computer, Off-Talk Self , speaking to oneself and Off-Talk Other, speaking to another person — uttered by subjects in a collaborative interlingual task mediated by an automatic speech-to-speech translation system, are reported here. The characteristics of the three speech types show significant differences...

In this paper, extractive speech summarization using different machine learning algorithms was investigated. The task of Speech summarization deals with extracting important and salient segments from speech in order to access, search, extract and browse speech files easier and in a less costly manner. In this paper, a new method for speech summarization without using automatic speech recognitio...
